Deep excavation support system — bored pile retaining wall application
SERVICE AREAS

Deep Excavation Support
(Retaining) Systems

Site-specific lateral support solutions that safeguard both the excavation and the neighbouring structures.

OVERVIEW

Keeps the excavation safe,
protects the adjacent structure.

Deep excavation support (retaining) systems are temporary or permanent support structures that resist the lateral soil and water pressures generated while opening deep foundation pits, safeguarding both the excavation and the neighbouring buildings and infrastructure.

The right shoring solution is determined according to excavation depth, soil profile, groundwater conditions and the state of surrounding structures. Geobim Engineering designs and delivers the most suitable and safest excavation support system for every site — from bored pile walls to diaphragm walls, from sheet pile systems to anchor and strut solutions.

01 — BORED PILE WALL

Bored Pile Wall

A bored pile wall is a shoring system formed by bored piles constructed side by side to safely support the perimeter of an excavation in deep excavations. By resisting the lateral soil and water pressures generated during excavation, it safeguards both the excavation and the neighbouring structures.

In bored pile wall design, Geobim Engineering analyses the excavation depth, soil profile and water conditions to determine the most suitable pile type; where necessary, it integrates anchors, capping beams or internal strut systems to deliver safe deep excavation solutions.

Type 01

Spaced Piles

Piles are placed at defined intervals; the soil in between is secured with shotcrete where required. A cost-effective, economical solution.

LOW GROUNDWATER · COHESIVE SOIL

Type 02

Contiguous Piles

Piles are constructed touching one another side by side to form a continuous wall. Preferred in dense and moderately permeable soils.

MODERATELY PERMEABLE SOIL · CONTINUOUS WALL

Type 03

Secant Piles

Primary (PCC) and secondary (reinforced) piles are constructed overlapping; a waterproof wall is formed, also providing a water cut-off function.

HIGH GROUNDWATER · WATERPROOF WALL

02 — DIAPHRAGM WALL

Diaphragm Wall

A diaphragm wall is a reinforced concrete excavation support and retaining element constructed by placing a reinforcement cage into a trench (panel) stabilised with bentonite or polymer slurry and casting concrete. Thanks to its high stiffness, waterproofing and capacity to reach great depths, it is among the foremost systems preferred for the most demanding deep excavation projects.

Diaphragm walls are widely used in works requiring large and deep excavations such as metro and infrastructure projects, high-rise buildings with deep basements, car parks, pump stations and water structures. Beyond being a temporary shoring element, they often also serve as the permanent load-bearing retaining wall of the structure; this provides both a structural and an economic advantage.

In diaphragm wall construction, Geobim Engineering meticulously controls panel stability, slurry quality and concrete continuity to produce solutions with high waterproofing and structural performance.

03 — SHEET PILE WALL

Sheet Pile Wall

A sheet pile wall is a watertight and flexible shoring system formed by driving or vibrating interlocking steel sheet pile sections into the ground so that they connect to one another. Its fast installation, the ability to be removed and reused, and its suitability for underwater works make the sheet pile wall an economical and practical solution in many projects.

Sheet pile walls are widely applied in coastal and harbour structures, quays and jetties, canal and riverside works, temporary excavation support and sites with high water levels. Thanks to their interlocking structure they form a watertight wall that both resists lateral soil pressure and prevents water ingress.

In sheet pile applications, Geobim Engineering determines the driving method suited to the ground conditions; where necessary it combines them with anchor or internal strut systems to provide safe and watertight excavation support solutions.
